The name of this piece is a nod to the Mister Rogers song, which refers to idealistic view of the world, in which people want to be good neighbors. I believe the good people of Ukraine and the good people of Russia want to be good neighbors. It is a dictator, his cronies, and his war machine that make it impossible. Bombs have destroyed beautiful neighborhoods where people lived, loved, and played with their children. Sadly, the same patterns are playing out in Israel and Palestine, now.

This piece celebrates the life of Jacques-Yves Cousteau, who was an explorer and environmentalist passionate about the sea and everything that swam or crawled in it. Cousteau warned us about the dangers of coastal development, pollution, exploitation, and over-fishing. His life was one of extraordinary passion and purpose. “The sea,” Cousteau said, “once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever.”

The 1804 duel between Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr took the life of one of our most brilliant founding fathers, and destroyed the career of a vice president and Revolutionary War hero. I remember learning about dueling in elementary school and being in total disbelief about the stupidity of it. Shooting someone in a bizarre social ritual over a disagreement or a slight to one’s honor? Even more shocking is that more than 200 years later, Americans are still shooting each other at record pace, but with far more lethal weapons, and that we seem unable to find any real solutions to the violence.

I believe it is the mind, heart, and eye of the photographer, and not the camera, that makes a good shot. It is learning to see – not just look at things.

Started in a class taught by Judy Coates Perez. This piece features old physiology illustrations similar to those in a textbook written by my great-great uncle Dr. Albert Philson Brubaker. This piece was on the cover of the January 2013 issue of the magazine Genetics in Medicine.

The passion flower comes in many varieties, but all have many small radial filaments (the squiggly little things that radiate out from the area in the center (which contains 3 stigmas and 5 anthers). It is very dramatic in appearance.

Synchronized Synchronous Fireflies

Hand-dyed and batik cotton fabric, fusible adhesive, Angelina, Crystalina, cotton threads, wool/polyester batting. Thread sketched and free-motion machine quilted. This piece celebrates a phenomenon observed in the Great Smoky Mountains where certain species of fireflies (also called lightning bugs) light up and turn off at the same time during a few weeks each summer. This got me thinking about synchronized swimmers, and I decided to make a piece with fireflies that were both synchronous and synchronized.

The exhibition debuted at Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden, near Charlotte, in February 2010.

Note the contrast between the organic lines in the fingerprint and the mechanical grid in the background. I created this piece as a sample for an article I wrote for the April/May issue of Quilting Arts magazine, called “Thread Sketching 101, Lesson 2: Focus on Line.”

Juried into the Studio Art Quilt Associates’ exhibition “SAQA Frontiers: Art Meets Science,” which debuted at the Festival of Quilts in Birmingham, England, Aug. 19-22, 2010. Featured in the Dec. 2010/Jan. 2011 issue of Quilters Newsletter.

This is my panel from “Motherhood,” a group quilt by The Pandoras, a group of art quilters. I loved nursing my children, and felt it to be a true communion on many levels: as an act of sharing, as a spiritual fellowship, and as a holy moment.
